Wow. ABC Family is offering the pilot episode of a new show, Kyle XY, free on iTunes. I saw an ad for it the other night, and then a poster somewhere in Manhattan today reminded me, and I downloaded it and just watched. Awesome. Seriously, go on iTunes right now and download it. It's a story about a boy who wakes up in the middle of the forest, no identity, the world is new to him, like he's just been born in a 16-year-old's body, and they discover he has a supercharged brain and can learn things really quickly, and the episode's about him exploring the world for the first time. It's done really well -- I got really into it, and this isn't the kind of stuff that usually grabs me at all. I have some concern that it'll turn into something dumb -- the one weak note in the episode is that there's someone in a truck who seems to be watching him, and I expect that we'll find out who he is in the next episode, and I fear it'll turn into a "hide him from the bad guy" kind of thing... which would be unfortunate, because the fun of this show -- the compelling thing about this show -- is the kid encountering the world for the first time and having to process it. Plot will ruin this show. I fear for this show. Because this episode is so good, but there's so much risk they could kill what's good about it, and very quickly. I urge you to check it out on iTunes, because it's really well done. And, you know what, brilliant marketing by ABC Family. They knew they had a solid product and needed to get people's attention. I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed it on ABC Family. But this got my attention and I watched it, and now I'll seek out future episodes. Good, smart marketing. This is how you use the Internet to market something.
