Oops! Joe Biden said something really stupid to the New York Observer, calling Barack Obama "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy." Obama's response, according to the article: "I didn’t take Senator Biden’s comments personally, but obviously they were historically inaccurate. African-American presidential candidates like Jesse Jackson, Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun and Al Sharpton gave a voice to many important issues through their campaigns, and no one would call them inarticulate."
Unreported by the New York Observer are some of Biden's other comments today:
"Hillary Clinton is the first woman in U.S. history who has been able to balance family and career, as well as being bright and clean and free of dust mites."
"John Edwards is the first person from North Carolina ever to learn how to read, as well as obviously being a nice-looking guy, with beautiful teeth."
"Christina Aguilera is the first human being ever to make music. It's quite an extraordinary accomplishment."
"According To Jim is the best show on television."
"The cheese grater is the most exciting development to come out of human civilization since the printing press."
[Okay, if you're having trouble deciding if any of these are truly analogous to what he said, you're not alone. I'm not actually sure what would be an exactly analogous statement, or if there even is one, given the context. I thought it would be so easy to be funny about this, but these past 15 minutes trying to write this post have mostly just been frustrating. Help me in the comments. I know there's joke potential here, I'm just not hitting it.]
