You know what's great? When How I Met Your Mother mentions a fake website, they actually create it. Awesome.
I think network policy requires them to do so. (They're at least forced to buy the address, if not actually develop the site.)
Remember how Conan was forced to create the horny manatee site after he jokingly mentioned it on his show?

Complete with a twenty minute fake song. Awesome.

I know this is quite irrelevant, but I honestly cannot watch that show (I am referring to "How I Met Your Mother") and cannot fathom anyone who finds it funny.
Seriously, I find staring at a carrot on a plate for 30 minutes (Yes, I sound like I've experienced it b/c I have, thanks to my old female flatmates forcing me to watch the movie "Dirty Dancing" with them, I literally found the carrot on the table infront of me more interesting. The roots came out in the most peculiar way...I felt a connection with the carrot and it saddened me that I was going to have to eat it as I realised I was getting hungry...) more interesting than watching that very very very simple plot per episode show.
But that is just me. I am more of an Arrested Development fan myself. TV/comedy cannot get any better than that.

Commenter one is correct. I was going to site an example from Friends, www.hahanotsomuch.com where Chandler says that and they developed a site, but it's down now! Guess the show being off the air allows for that.
And I completely disagree with mmk080... HIMYM is one of my favorites and I believe to be one of the best written and most creatively executed shows on TV. Different strokes, I suppose...

Different strokes indeed. E, I want to thank you for noticing that what I was stating about that show was simply an opinion, and nothing more
You see, I've recently been completely "flamed" by what can only be described as an internet mob on techcrunch for an opinion I made and commented about on their site (I've blogged about it too, click on my name above to see). It was pretty disenchanting and depressing how much the majority of the commenters (atleast on that day on techcrunch) formed arguments that can only be described as 12 yr old quality-material at best. They threatened me and insulted me, my beliefs, and my blog as well (which I found hilarious)!
Anyway, sorry to have diverged away from the topic at hand. Yeah, I still don't like HIMYM :P That reminds me, I got to go buy some carrots.

Scrubs did the same thing for that sex maniac doctor character.

I really do love HIMYM. I've seen all of Arrested Development. I think it had jokes that were occasionally more clever. And it was also funny. But...I enjoy HIMYM more.

Building a site like that gives additional in-universe entertainment to the viewers who watch those TV shows, just like in the show "How I Met Your Mother" in an episode which Barney Stinson made a video resume of himself in the past. When you visit the site that was shown on that episode, you'll be able to watch the whole funny segment for free.
