If you pretend a computer didn't shut off suddenly without warning, twice in one day, will the problem go away? Part of me is hoping that's the case. The more sensible part of me spent some time tonight burning anything I may ever want from this computer onto DVD. The part of me that writes my book is going to be e-mailing it to myself every 10 seconds or so. What a pain, but, then again, as calamities go, it's pretty tolerable. Hopefully it was just the dust that built up under the fan, a bit. I doubt it, but it seems to be okay tonight, for the past 2 hours or so, since I cleaned the dust. Who knows. It's a machine. Machines are weird. My George Foreman grill sparks sometimes when I unplug it. The freezer doesn't always keep ice cream totally frozen. My watch gains a minute a month. Machines. I hate machines.
I feel your pain. You know what sucks? When you are 200 words away from finishing your paper and Word all of a sudden decides to screw you over by shutting down. And it wasn't saved.

Perhaps you should add Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut to your reading list.

If it's a laptop, that happened to me, too. Apparently it wasn't getting ventilated. The fan would need to be cleaned. If it's a normal CPU, it could be for the same reason.

I just had that problem with my laptop. It would shutdown with no errors at random times. When I took it in I was told that it just needed to be cleaned, especially around the fan. It sounds like that might be your problem.
Having a backup of your stuff is also a good idea. ;-)

Same thing was happening to me a few months ago. I ignored it. Laptop finally shutoff for good and I freaked. Processor meltdown.
