I got tipped off yesterday that there was a fire in Los Angeles causing a cloud of fog over the area where Anonymous Lawyer's fictional firm would be, and so I wrote a quick post over there suggesting that a firm's associate incinerator may have malfunctioned. Not that firms don't lose enough associates to natural attrition that it would really make sense to incinerate any of them, but, hey, I wasn't really pondering the logic, just trying to write a quick post. So I get an e-mail today to the anonymous account:
Incinerators? For associates? Maybe just a little too culturally insensitive, especially for a profession with lots of Meyers, Rosenfelds, Greenbergs, Silvers, Strauss, etc. generating all those billable hours.
Because if I was talking about a profession without a lot of Jews, then a company incinerating its employees would be perfectly appropriate, right? Just an odd response, I thought. Unexpected. Eh, it makes the day interesting.
When you explain a joke it takes all the joy out of it.

My problem with that post was that I didn't think it was funny. Everything Anonymous Lawyer says is so incredulous that you can't believe it, but there's usually some glimmer of possibility, that he might *really* think that way. This was one of the first posts that was too outrageous for me to even consider that possibility. Could a L.A. partner despise his associates, his wife, his kids? Sure. Could he actually be *incinerating* his associates? Hell no.
No matter, I'll still buy a few copies of the book when it's released :)

Not to pile on, but the post was a bit below standards. I know that incinerators are always a touchy subject. . .
I agree with the above. It just wasn't a funny post.
Funny would have been recruiting a dozen associates to stand around the perimeter of AL's estate with garden hoses to protect against the wall of fire...

I liked it. It's called "black humor." It's funny because it's so morbidly outrageous.

I agree with Pam, I thought it was quite funny. People really are quick to criticise.

We've all been well aware of your anti-semitic tendencies for quite some time now. It's okay, really.

Seriously people? I'm Jewish and I wasn't offended. This is a HUMOROUS FICTIONAL BLOG. I am sure he didn't mean anything about incinerating Jews. Geez. Lighten up. Life's too short.

I assume that most readers of your blogs are either 1) friends; and/or 2) attorneys. Your friends would understand your sense of humor and other attorneys should have thicker skins than to let something like the incinerator post set them off, I can only imagine what happens when something actually bad happens, or can I?
